The nautical trend sails on with Tommy Hilfiger‘s Fall 2016 RTW collection, as the Park Avenue Armory was transformed into the T.H. Atlantic vessel runway. While some designers have devoted subtle elements to the maritime concept, Tommy Hilfiger took a direct, beat you over the head with a literal translation.Cutesy and cartoonish, the motif was splayed throughout the collection in officer jackets, navy blue hues, square neck sailor shirts, and tons of stripes. Shimmering 1930’s sweater dresses were less literal translations, but up close, the anchor and rope pattern added more kitsch to an overdone theme.
A few standout pieces rise above the rest when the theme is more muted. A high-waisted mini skirt with gold buttons on both sides is clasped in the front with a gold rope belt is paired with an imperial collared light blue blouse. The pant version with the high waist and button rows looks stellar. A sheer knee length dress has small gold buttons down the plunge neck with a tie sash and metallic stripe piping layered down to the hemline. And I love the sheer blush bias-striped pencil skirt with a cozy white cowl neck sweater with linear sequins.
Overall, the collection was just a little too much theme park. And why the tiaras? Is the brand intentionally trying to cater to children with Disney-level theme density? Ok, here’s an obligatory shot of Gigi Hadid in sequins to make you feel better.
