Ralph Lauren dedicated his Fall 2016 RTW collection to the English style, and what an ode to luxury it was. The looks started in signature Lauren shades of monochromatic beige in  cardigans, perfectly tailored trousers, a jacket and sweater over shorts, and a trench coat.  “Everything is super soft, super sophisticated,” noted Lauren. “Then it starts to build.”

The Ralph Lauren woman could just as well be on a hunt party in the English countryside as she could be attending a dinner party in bustling London. A patchwork tweed coat looks like a professor’s robe taken straight from a Harry Potter wardrobe…in a good way. It’s not farcical or cartoonish. Just absolutely gorgeous and incredibly English nostalgic.

A few looks felt a bit like an homage to the late David Bowie – like the muted jacquard jacket with an almost leather vibe over a crisp white button up with ruffled cuffs, and streamlined black boot cut trousers. As well, the black duster jacket with gold embroidered cuffs over a ruffle collar blouse and black trousers with a single gold stripe down the side.

But then the collection quickly transitions to the fabulously chic cocktail numbers and sleek black dresses like the sheer number with a billowing sheer cape and white collar and cuffs. A strapless eggplant ruched velvet gown is elegantly understated. A red pleat halter gown with a gilded royal crest embellishment at the high neck ends with a beautiful bias cut hem showing a bit of the sleek black boots.

The show ends with two stunning water effect looks in gold, showing Lauren‘s incredible creativity paired with his perfectly restrained editing. Understated sophistication is very Lauren. I always love his collections, as the details are done in such a refined manner. Even a water effect gown.
