As understated as the Bottega Veneta collection was, the Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2016 RTW show went that far in the opposite direction. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana chose the fairy tale princess as their literal muse, and they were certain to beat you over the head with the fantasy. Just in case you weren’t getting it. Entirely and completely.

Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and Alice in Wonderland were all represented. Much of the collection could certainly be considered ready to wear by Disney employees as well as 12 and under. Place all of the looks with oversized cartoon prints in that category. Thankfully, the rest of the collection was a little more figurative. Oversized floral prints and vintage silhouettes both balanced the collection in a better direction. There were pretty monochrome pencil midis and lace looks, including a slip dress covered in a 3D rose duster coat.

Anything without the giant glittering oversized patches of cats, mice, chandeliers, birds, and the like was a winner in my book. Every childhood story was addressed and at times, the runway was nauseating. I spared you the worst looks.

Some of the ideas were wonderful. The textures, the 30’s and 50’s silhouettes we’ve seen played on the runway this season were great. But in many of the looks, phenomenal concepts were executed in such a caricature way, that the idea was wasted. So sad!
