There’s beauty in the simplicity, and this mantra continues to ring true in Carolina Herrera‘s latest collection. In a conscious effort to simplify the silhouette, the designer instead chose to perfect one of her house signatures – the crisp white blouse – in a series of understated but elegant looks. The dress shirt rethought is a trend that carries over from the Spring 17 season, but this is far beyond trendy for Herrera. This is her bread and butter. The tops were varied in perfection – one with an exaggerated Puritan collar, several with ribbon ties, a wrapped sash belt at the waist, a peplum…even a capelet that she also did in a sheer blue version very successfully. And I never thought I’d say this, but Herrera made a pretty badass leather jacket.

From there, came the weightier intermezzo in wool, velvet, and jacquard. Midi dresses were A-lines or columns with an embellished sleeve here, a bow on the collar there. The more I study the clothes, the more I find temperance used as Herrera‘s art form. A navy cape is cinched perfectly at the waist to accentuate the figure while the outer cape creates the volume. A crescendo forms with knits over a velvet pant and chiffon pleated skirts before the final aria.

The height of the show was when the light as air chiffon looks started wafting down the runway, with the first look a deep plunge pleat gown in blue. Just as with the white blouse, we saw here too a study in style confined by the same simple silhouettes. Easy dresses that moved and breathed showed off pleats, tiers, muted touches of lacework and beading…just a touch.

The final dresses had metallic elements added in – the final crescendo toward a few red carpet ready moments of rose gold, navy chiffon, tulle, and velvet make their wow moments. Carolina Herrera‘s classicism and restraint led to just beautiful, feminine clothes this season. There was nothing that came down the runway that wasn’t a major make you look gorgeous garment.
