A trip to Venice proved inspirational for Alberta Ferretti‘s Fall 17 RTW collection, with direct references made of the floating city’s very distinct culture. From gondoliers and striped poles to masquerades to Piazza San Marco’s famous lion, the imagery was immediately recognizable as Venetian.

The runway show kicked off with Gigi Hadid wearing a chiffon dress and matching full-length cape in a dreamy print of the city, embellished with ruffles and tied with velvet. From there, it was a bevy of romanticism in chiffon maxi dresses, wide-leg pants with sailor collar tops in stripes, ribbed sweaters, and weighty capes.

Silhouettes were mostly vintage with a 40’s vibe. Waists were high and drawn in, skirts flowed gently, and the nautical vibe felt easy and light-hearted. The chiffon dresses were draped with the print, ruffles, and embroideries falling at an angle down the body, accentuating the feminine figure beautifully.

The final looks were a continuation of the capsule collection sweaters we first saw on last season’s runway. And while I gave them a confused review (why days of the week? why not a cute saying or something of more substance?), they’ve been flying off the shelves.

Love the caps and the printed chiffons; the day of the week sweaters are a bit odd…

Yes, those chiffons are gorgeous. And I agree- can’t get on that sweater train!
