The Little Black Dress. A staple in every woman’s repertoire that we all realize is a mandatory somewhere around college. When we find a good one, we snatch it up and it becomes one of the old faithfuls in our closets for years as everything else rotates in and out. And no matter how many LBD’s I have, I never seem to get rid of any of them. Because each has its little specialty of highlighting, accentuating, or hiding certain areas better than the others.

For his Fall 17 collection, Giambattista Valli chose this particular wardrobe essential, looking at the Parisian girl as his muse. His reimagined LBD showed up in not only black, but also white, houndstooth, and fire engine red. The designer’s signature frothy and feminine dresses were embellished with ruffles, lace, and those tiny little polka dots that seem to be all over the runways this season.

Peplum skirts, shoulder flounces and the occasional corset belts, and the sheer, breezy fabrics created a sensual vibe. All sophisticated, but feminine and flirty. But Valli added a bit of unexpect sport to the collection as well to serve the athleisure types. Nike leggings were paired with peasant tops as well as a studded jacket emblazoned with V’s and a few G’s embroidered in silver circles. Long overdue, but nice branding.

Shoulders and sleeves are definitely still making a statement this season, and for the most part, they were exciting on Valli‘s looks. But one in particular – a red knee length dress with exaggerated peasant sleeves ended up making the model look like a football linebacker. Yet other treatments like the flounce and the vertical ruffle added volume without throwing off the proportions.

Other than the athleisure, these are no major departure from Giambattista Valli. But you have to look closely at the garments to see the craftsmanship and creativity. Take for instance several the floral looks. At closer inspection, they have a honeycomb lace mesh overlay, adding a fantastic texture to the look.

On other monochrome lace looks, the lace is constructed into a herringbone pattern that looks absolutely incredible.

On a black sheer dress with a high ruffle collar, black hearts create a fantastic texture, that far away appears to be a heavier, richer fabric.

And did you notice the strawberries? Valli added this cute motif to just a few of his looks including a white cropped jacket and on sheer rectangle cutouts on the décolletage.

The genius is in the details with this season.
