Donatella Versace devoted her latest collection to the City of Angels. The designer apparently has an ongoing love affair with L.A., and she recently sent her entire team to explore the districts of the city for inspiration for Versace‘s Resort 2018 looks.
The cultural scenes of the districts were seen throughout her designs, like the tailored pinstriped power suits reflective of the Financial District. Of course Donatella had to sex it up, as is her way, with high slits, lace insets, bra tops, cold shoulders, all with a little bit of rock and roll peppered in by way of combat boots and a ton of studs. Navy chiffon pleats graze over a black sheer underlay with a lace hem skirt. A navy studded cardigan peeks out over the skirt underneath a fur jacket tiered with finely cut leather fringing…of course, studded. This look is so badass but cute at the same time, and I want to wear it NOW.
Palm trees from Beverly Hills were embroidered on relaxed shirting, denim, and studded military vibe khaki jackets. Vibrantly colored prints surprised the usual edgy design house by reinventing the Versace house baroque signature print. And the art scene of Venice Beach and sure, the Miracle Mile are getting their nods as well with loud tones that would make the 90’s proud on bomber jackets over midis, crochet knit moments from head to toe, and even the reprise of the 90’s slip dress.
Donatella and her team took quite a leap with some of these, and the risks paid off. Good collection, not overtly beating us over the head with references, and even a little nostalgia mixed in.
