The 75th Venice Film Festival kicked off last week, and from the beginning, arrivals were glamorous and sometimes seriously diva-style dramatic.

A top contender in the most glamorous film fests, Venezia draws Hollywood elite both competing and screening, who make sure they bring their A-game. Among the actresses hitting the Venetian red carpet this year are Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts, Emma Stone, and Anne Hathaway.

This year, Armani clearly owned the red carpet, thus far sending at least eight gorgeous gowns in front of the flashing lights…and surely more to come.

BEST DRESSED

Lady Gaga

In the battle of the feathers, Lady Gaga went head-to-head with Cate Blanchett in this walloping froth of pink that engulfed her in fluffy theatrics. There was only room for one when she took the red carpet…and really, you didn’t want to be anywhere nearby trying to get your glam on, because she’d be sure to steal your spotlight.

Cate Blanchett

Not missing a beat, Blanchett hit back with – that’s right – the mullet of feathered gowns. Sophisticated and understated in the front, and party feathers in the back. But seriously, the deep sweetheart plunge, the sumptuous, curve-clinging velvet, the jeweled off the shoulder straps with the wispy feathers. It’s all so gorgeous.

Nima Benati

She may not be an A-lister, but fashion photographer Nima Benati was certainly turning heads in this gold bombshell number by Rok Cibej. But seriously Nima. Hold 1 finger up if you can breathe, 2 for no and we’ll come rescue you!

Things did get a little awkward when she took this clearly 10 photo and doctored it to make it “perfect”, then got called out on Instagram. Personally, I like this original version much better.

Naomi Watts

Sure, it reads slight of Post-It notes, but it’s the chicest version of a tiered paper dress I’ve seen in quite some time. And not only is it a flattering look that hugs Naomi’s silhouette, but it’s also fun and playful.

WORST DRESSED

Sara Sampaio

Listen, Linda, Listen! Just because something is trending (re: everything 1980’s) does not mean you need to memorialize it on the red carpet. I giant bow across your entire upper body is never a good look. Giant bows, as a general rule, were left in the 1980’s along with MC Hammer pants and acid washed denim.

Claire Foy

I would expect the queen to wear something more than an oversized scarf with felt fringe on the red carpet. Did Pierpaolo Picciolo run out of time for Foy’s red carpet look because he had to devote so much to Lady Gaga’s feather creation? Bad juju.

Charlotte Le Bon

When mom forgot it was Pilgrim dress-up day and the fabric store was closed, so she pulled down her “French Country” curtains.
