Alessandro Dell’Acqua looked to Gala Dalí, wife of surrealism artist Salvador, for inspiration for Rochas‘ S/S16 RTW collection. Gala was charismatic and lively – a muse for many artists in the early 20th century, as she and Salvador had an open relationship. Her exploits went on long into her late years, giving Gala the genuine cougar status long before it was a term. The more you know.
The result was a collection of looks in luxurious fabrics and textures and a mashing of romantic, feminine as well as a few androgynous silhouettes, as though Rochas was styling for both an artist as well as a socialite. Prints played a role in about half of the collection, and they were complex, layered and sometimes random. Favorites were the jacquard and black lace slip dress with the gorgeous rose, gold and grey print as well as the salmon ruffle square top over a pencil skirt with a print of giraffes under the sun. Seriously, reading this, it sounds like a child’s bedroom….but I LOVE that print!
