Leave it to Gucci to take to a place of worship usually reserved for funerals or weddings to British royalty for their Cruise 17 collection. Westminster Abbey is surely an inspiring backdrop. Its expansive size and Gothic details create a powerful, awe-inspiring reaction.

I can only assume that the 96-look collection shown in the Cloisters was far beyond anything possibly ever worn at the Abbey. It was a mishmash of traditional English proper silhouettes with hyper intensive colors and patterns. Epileptics beware, when viewed in quick succession, this collection looks more like a neon light show.

There were too many motifs to count – a brazen, how much can we stuff into one season challenge. I wonder if there is also the unspoken question of, how far can we push the ridiculousness, and there will still be people out there taking this seriously. Case in point: the animal embroideries. I mean, when you intentionally spend a considerable amount of money on a skirt that has a snarling wolf over your lady bits with rays of bling coming out of his head, you have to wonder about your sanity, right?

Don’t get me wrong – I actually liked a lot of the looks in the collection. Together, it was overwhelming and frenetic. But when you pull back the layers, you just might find yourself in awe over the little details you didn’t notice before in each piece, especially the impeccable finishing the fashion house is known for.

  1. There are a few lovely pieces here but for the most part the collection presents as a big hot mess! Just my viewpoint …

  2. Interesting choice of venue for their show. However, their multi-coloured collection isn’t as inspiring as expected.
