When Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody is playing, you know the energy of the collection is going to be high. Infused with the ’70’s vibe, Zuhair Murad‘s Fall 2016 Couture collection broke out of the princess shimmer gown stereotype and went a little rocker, a little hippie chic, and a little Gustav Klimt art piece.
The base looks were very much house Murad, with sheer skintight embroidered body silhouette gowns, jumpsuits, a caftan, mini dresses, and a stunning bridal gown to close the show. The vintage 70’s vibe was infused with ruffled hemlines over thigh high boots, velvet capes, dipped down cartwheel hats, and intricate macrame embroideries.
The color palette varied just as much as the textiles, with hues of olive and moss green, scarlet, black, cyan, purple, iris, plum, soft pink and nude tones on fabrics of lace, chiffon, tulle, velvet and crepe. I loved how the barely there skin tone effect sheer gowns came out, and that Murad recognized the diversity that actually exists out there (YES!), creating different shades of skin tone sheer gowns.
As a super pale girl, that is so refreshing to see a designer branch out beyond just one single shade to fit everyone. It’s like the cosmetic companies that only put out 2-3 options for foundation. Um, right! Not everybody is going to fit in that mold! So from this fair fashionista, it’s so fab to see Murad taking this approach.
And that’s not even my favorite part of the collection. Murad took a little detour into the art world with a short little ode to Gustav Klimt with vibrant pops of colorful embroidery that ran the full spectrum of the color wheel. How incredibly gorgeous. Walking works of art comparable to one of my favorite painters? Yes please! Somebody buy me one of these gowns!
Plus he had a few gowns that had this amazing technique on the florals that reminded me of gesso painting, made. It showed up the best on the iris gown. Gorgeous!
