“This is no fairy tale.” Karl Lagerfeld made it clear his and Silvia Venturini Fendi‘s choice of Rome as inspiration was not going to include overt romanticism and direct references to ancient ruins, or the Trevi Fountain. More a celebration of impeccably made haute fashion clothes.

The runway show started with a grey herringbone coat with fur cuffs on quarter sleeves, worn over a plaid Prince of Wales midi atop red pointed toe boots. These boots were a staple throughout the collection, providing a slick pop of energetic color against some of the muted tones. From there, it was a focus on craftsmanship with a fantastic balance between well-tailored menswear fabrics and sensual movement. Embroideries, graphics, vintage-nodding waist tucks, and sheared furs all create sumptuous textured details that attract the eye to all the right places.

There were a few softer looks as well in the form of sheer dresses, with the same waist tucks – just a slight nod to the old world glamour of Rome in its vintage heyday. Deep, deep plunge V swimwear was covered by sheer mesh lattice looks that were absolutely to die for. The finale look was a similar motif – a black plunge top covered by a sheer dress with 60’s style floral embroideries and a pleat wrap skirt. Gorgeous. It’s all just really good fashion.

And seriously, the bags. Love, love, love!

This is one of the best collections from KL I’ve seen in quite awhile! Overall, the Fall 2017 collections are showing well–beautiful, creative, and wearable.
