It reads like a cheesy 2000’s movie when everybody was obsessed with making their own version of the college experience – Legally Blonde, Old School, Accepted, The Rules of Attraction, American Pie, Slackers… I can go on. But no, this actually happened in real life. Rihanna went to Harvard on Monday when the university awarded the high school dropout their Humanitarian of the Year award.
I didn’t even know Rihanna was a high school dropout, but that just goes to show that sometimes, when people make mistakes or don’t get the easy route, they can still make something out of themselves….and have the grounded presence of mind to remember to give back once they’ve made it.
Receiving the award, Rihanna started her speech with “so, I made it to Harvard,” while flipping her hair back. She reminded us that “you don’t have to be rich to be a humanitarian, to help somebody. You don’t have to be famous. You don’t have to be college-educated.” She received the award for promoting healthcare and education in the Caribbean. She funded a center for oncology and nuclear medicine in her home country of Barbados, and also established the Clara Lionel Foundation Scholarship Program to help Caribbean students attending universities in the U.S.
And of course, she looked fabulous in a grey herringbone off-the-shoulder belted midi dress. She wore matching heeled OTK boots, and the whole look together just killed it. She looked polished, but still showed some skin. Congrats, Ri!
