Inspo: Proper Bohemian
Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig’s Marchesa tour through the Far East continued with their Spring 2018 season citing Aimée Crocker’s travels to Japan as their inspiration. The eccentric proper bohemian was a bit of an explorer in the 1920’s, and spent her time, when not on her galivants around the globe, amongst her lovers and five husbands, Buddhism, pearls, snakes and even playing drinking games with Oscar Wilde. I feel like we could have/should have been friends purely for the entertainment.
The Results: Pearl-Clutching Plunges and Cherry Blossoms
The runway looks started out in black and white – both frothy confections as well as sleek tuxedo style suits – embellished with crystals, pearls, bows, and cherry blossom embroideries in gold. The long-strand pearl looks had a very classic Coco Chanel vibe going on, and why not? There’s only 19 years between them with Chanel the senior. But these pearls are also a big part of Japanese culture.
This was the dream-like high before it all came crashing down. See the rundown on the Harvey scandal, and my take on Georgina Chapman and Marchesa’s involvement.
Twirl, Twirl, Twirl
From there, the collection bloomed in fluffy wisteria vines and layers of tulle, hand dyed organza cherry blossoms, and obi style belts made of long sashes. Kimono style sleeves were complemented with v-cut plunging necklines, and the effect was subtly romantic and flattering.
Dream a Little Dream
Of course, the Marchesa duo ensured their die hard followers had their fill of ethereal looks to choose from in the collection. Dreamy sheer moments wafted down the runway, lace up across the bodice with a skinny velvet belt, bedecked in crystals, florals, and fringe.
Will we be seeing any of these on the Emmy’s red carpet this weekend?! I hope so!
