I seriously can’t believe we’re only halfway through January and already on the second award show. These guys aren’t playing. And the SAG Awards are just around the corner. They are NOT playing around this year! So it’s almost like a which one did you wear better? This week, last week, or the week before? This ought to be interesting.

Last night’s red carpet had a flurry of ups with some major celebs pulling out their A-game. A few makeup blunders made for some awkward photos, but overall the ladies just killed it with their style game. There was creativity, dazzle, sensuality, texture, and some great pops of color and prints.

And I had to really search for any worst dressed contenders, which is fantastic.

Kaley Cuoco ~ Gown: J. Mendel

I loved this drop waist geometric J. Mendel gown from the moment I first saw it, and Kaley wears it well. It’s unexpected, which I love, but it still has the perfect level of glamour. The hair could have used a little pick-me-up, but meh…still a stellar look.

Constance Wu ~ Gown: Rodarte // Shoes:
Aquazzura // Jewelry: Lorraine Schwartz // Clutch: Roger Vivier

Constance looks gorgeous here. The silhouette is perfect for her petite frame, and the petal sleeves give this great “armor” vibe as well to juxtapose the delicate nature of the gown. And the shape of the plunge is perfection.

Nicole Kidman ~ Gown: Armani // Shoes: Christian Louboutin // Clutch: Moynat // Jewelry: Fred Leighton and Omega

Nicole Kidman always kills it in a structural gown. She is so tiny. Look at those arms! This Armani moment creates more curve, while still showing off her statuesque physique. It was a daring risk that definitely paid off.

Kiki Layne ~ Gown: Versace // Shoes: Casadei

Yes, yes, yes. Kiki looks divine. The dress is simple, but with her amazing figure, this shimmering balletic gown might as well be a bodysuit with the way it’s hugging her curves. The sheer chiffon skirt climbing up into pleating gives it movement and a delicate touch.

Indya Moore ~ Gown: Louis Vuitton

Now this is a woman who caters to no one. Opting for a shimmery gown would have been the safe bet. But she went with a demure modernist moment from Louis Vuitton, and white maximalism was realized on the red carpet.

Gemma Chan ~ Gown: Jason Wu // Shoes: Jimmy Choo // Clutch: Tyler Ellis // Jewelry: Anita Ko

First, it’s so rare to see print on the red carpet, so I love the fact that Gemma Chan and Jason Wu went for it….and did so well. This off-the-shoulder floral gown is just total romance.

Laura Harrier ~ Gown: Louis Vuitton // Jewelry: Bulgari

Laura looked chic on this twist front gown with a starburst of rhinestones emanating from the center. The scoop plunge and squared shoulders create an interesting gender-fluid dynamic that evolves past the expected on the red carpet without going straight to the pantsuit.

Amandla Stenberg ~ Gown: Khaite // Jewelry: Graziela Gems, Jennifer Fisher, and Anita Ko

Rue needs no bed of flowers for this gown – this look is on fire. The petal open v-neckline creates a gorgeous balance against the wide billowing skirt. And that cape with the bell sleeves. Yaaassss.

Charlize Theron ~ Gown: Givenchy // Shoes: Christian Louboutin // Jewelry: Messika

What is this magic. Givenchy is known for their amazing textile creations (like the garbage bag gowns!), edging toward avant garde. This gown might as well be made out of some sort of confectionary voodoo. Both the silhouette and structure look fantastic on Charlize, with the cutout creating the perfect pop of skin needed to create that balance.

Catherine O’Hara ~ Suit: Georges Chakra

Catherine O’Hara gets Best in Show for this shimmery number from Mr. Chakra. First, I love the wide leg creating this long silhouette for Kevin’s mom. But the real moment-makers for me are those beaded poppy flowers climbing up the edge of the jacket, creating fantastic curve. Get it, girl.

Connie Britton ~ Gown: Galvan // Shoes Sophia Webster // Jewelry: Irene Neuwirth

Connie seems so sweet, so I hate to do this. And green with auburn hair is usually a win, but this particular shade and style just isn’t doing her any favors. The cut is wrong for her figure, and I’ve watched her in Dirty John – she has a great figure. Next time, gadget…next time.

America Ferrera ~ Suit: ALC // Jacket: Theory // Shoes: Jimmy Choo // Clutch: Tyler Ellis // Jewelry: Amway and Norman Silverman

I love a good cropped jacket as well as a jumpsuit. But this look just ended up taking a few wrong turns. First, doesn’t it look a sequined top hat away from performing as a tap dancer? Second, it kinda had a camel toe going. Third, it felt just kinda dates. I love you America. I just don’t love your outfit this time, boo.

Maggie Gyllenhaal ~ Gown: Prada // Jewelry: Bulgari

Maggie, why?! It’s Prada. Prada, why?! Why choose this material? It seriously has that $100 mail-order Disney princess costume that a grown woman would wear to be ironic. I haz sad face.

Chrissy Teigen ~ Gown: Maison Yeya // Shoes: Stuart Weitzman // Clutch: Jimmy Choo // Jewelry: Jaipur Gems and Yvan Tufenjian

So I don’t hate this gown. But the bodice – structured, ruched, asymmetrical…it just embodies the worst parts 80’s fashion. Sorry lady. You’re still my favorite.
