If you’re getting ready for spring break you’re bound to be looking forward to warm days spent lounging on sunny beaches, relaxation, no deadlines or responsibility, perhaps even a cocktail or two. But there’s one thing you’re probably not looking forward to – packing.
I’ve put together a list of travel capsule wardrobe essentials, to help make your outfit decisions easier and your suitcase lighter, saving you time spent folding and packing so you can spend it having fun instead. Pack these essentials and you’ll be all set!
Your favourite bikini or swimming costume should be the first thing you slip into your suitcase if time on the beach or by the pool is on the agenda. Mix and match bikini styles are a great choice, allowing you to change up your style without sacrificing on luggage space – particularly key if you only plan to take a carry on. One swimsuit or bikini that dries quickly is usually enough, but I like to take two for a bit of variety!
Boho-style day tops never go out of fashion, and there are styles to suit everyone. These loose tops are perfect to throw over a bikini but don’t lack a thing in style, and they don’t look out of place at the swankiest beach bar or restaurant. I like to dress them up with capri pants, espadrilles and statement earrings.
Perfect for a day out or a night on the town, crops or anywhere up to capris really, look just as elegant with a smart flip flop as with a strappy sandal or espadrille. If you’re planning a spot of shopping as part of your trip crops are perfect, keeping you warm in air-conditioned shops and cool when you hit the roof terrace for refreshment. The key is to wear something loose fitted or even wide-leg – nothing that hugs the body too tightly. If you’re going somewhere warm and tropical, you want your skin to breathe. Of course, shorts for also an easy go-to for low key beach or pool days!
Chances are you know which one it is. Whether chic and understated or celebratory and flamboyant, this is the dress in your wardrobe that always makes you feel great. Not sure you’ve got one that fits the bill? Check out Valentino’s dresses – the designs are so classic and flattering that I’d be tempted to take two!
Statement earrings glam up any outfit and are just what you need to turn relaxed casual into ready to party. They are also the perfect finishing touch to your favourite evening dress. A hat is a must for sunny days to protect your face and neck. I love a floppy style, and there are lots that fold flat in your case if you don’t fancy wearing one on the plane.
I try to keep it simple and just take two. One large bag that’s good enough for the beach but smart enough to take on the plane and out for the day (I love a straw style) plus a clutch or long strap shoulder bag, for balmy evenings, when just a slick of mascara and lipstick is all you need.
Flip flops and slides are so versatile that I’ve traveled far and wide in them. I’d add a statement heel to go with your best dress – thin, strappy sandals or espadrilles are summery but smart, and will also look great with trousers.
